“Snake Garden”

Acrylic9 × 12 × 1.0 in

I photographed the garter snake at our camp on the bayou, deep in the swamp of South Louisiana. I'm just curious. Where was he when I was planning flowers and laying down the mulch? This is my very first acrylic painting and I entered it into our local art show. The show was over 50 years old during our shrimp and petroleum festival time. Long story, but I could not sign or enter it using my full legal name. But, I did beat all the artists who had painted for years and won tons of shows. That was fun! I was still young back then so yes my sense of humor might seem twisted sometimes. The judge initially didn't give it much notice, as repeated back to me by his artist guide, but then he turned back to it. That's when he saw the snake. My mom said judges love surprises in art. Afterward, at a reception for the artists and the different medium judges, he told me it was my composition that he liked. By, Julia Claire (NFS)
