Artist Profile

Julia Orlando

I was raised by an artist who excelled in pastels, acrylics, and oils and I had zero interest. Then, after my youngest of four children passed away she did a pastel portrait of her. My desire to learn how to paint was born in my late 30’s. My healing from that season of my life truly began. I tapped into creating something, anything, as beautiful as my little girl was. I'm almost 63 now. And it turns out I am a watercolorist. I've done two commissions of the same subject and they requested prints as gifts. I agreed if they let me have them printed professionally. I could choose the paper. She needed a limit of five. I selected a company, fine watercolor paper and signed and numbered only five. I was very happy for them. My love for what I do now is always the story behind the painting. I'll post that watercolor here. I'm truly a writer and sometimes I write my best chapters when there's a brush in my hands. The commission had its own story. One I hope to put into words one day. I have a non-fiction and a fiction on the desk calling my name. Welcome to this boho, imaginative creative’s wonder of all things; from mixed media to paintings, handsewn, heirloom baby clothes or lace weight embellished bridal garters, bonnets, blankets and booties, photograph restorations, photography and my words sprawled throughout notebooks, backs of receipts: even a shopping bag will do. All of me shows up in a deep loving flow state for someone else to love equally. Thanks for reading through that and that hat? That's my signature hat. Especially, if I am studying my subject to paint or write about when I'm in New Orleans. Love, Julia
